Your young artist will develop beginning-level skills with the studio pottery wheels this week, and gain experience and practice setting up, centering, throwing, removing, cleaning, drying and trimming, and maintaining a safe and clean pottery studio environment.  Completion of Studio Sampler Week 1 or a prior Terracotta Camp is strongly encouraged.

Projects include:

  • A wheel-thrown bowl (or two)
  • A wheel-thrown mug (or two)
  • A wheel-thrown bud vase (or two)

(Up to 6 finished pieces, total)

Day One: During the first day of camp, our artists will become oriented to our community pottery studio and begin to learn and develop beginning pottery skills. They will learn how to use and share our tools, equipment and creative community space. They will get to set up and begin centering clay on the wheel, and throwing their first bowls.

Day Two: Students will resume their ceramic work, paying special attention to the use of water, thickness and and texture of their creations. They will examine example pottery for why it did or did not turn out, and work to apply that insight to their own works as they begin on their mugs and vases.

Day Three: Students will learn how to work with leather-hard clay by trimming their creations from the prior two days, and preparing their pottery for drying. At this stage, students will add a handle to their mugs, create a foot for their bowls, and shape their vases. Students will spend time inspecting their own work and finishing details of their creations.

Day Four: Students will be introduced to three forms of decorating techniques utilizing underglazes for sgraffito, transfers and linocut making and stamping.

The wheel is a significant workout for bodies that are not used to it, which is why we spend the first two days actively throwing on the wheel and the second two days with more attention and time finishing and detailing their pottery.

Prices include all instruction, clay, tools, kiln firing, and dip-glazing of pottery.

Camp occurs Tuesday- Friday.  Ages 10+ please.
