We're creating beginner-friendly animals using slab-building and pinch-pot techniques in this 4-day workshop. Campers will learn how to use our studio equipment, including our extruder, slab roller and wheel as they create a variety of forms, and add ears, legs, tails and more.
Projects include:
- An animal sculpture (paperweight size)
- An animal planter
- A cat mug with tail handle
- A cute (or fierce) piggy bank
- A pre-made piece of pottery of the student's choice to pottery paint
Our Clay Camp Schedule:
Day One: During the first day of camp, our artists will become oriented to our community pottery studio and begin to learn and develop beginning pottery skills. They will learn how to use and share our tools, equipment and creative community space. They will examine and investigate example pottery for why it did or did not turn out, and work to apply that insight to their own works as they begin on their animal planter (made with our studio slab roller) and cat mug (made with our studio wall extruder).
Day Two: Students will resume their ceramic work, paying special attention to the use of water, thickness and texture of their creations. They will get to set up and begin centering clay on the wheel to create the bodies of their animal sculptures, and create and assemble a piggy bank.
Day Three: Students will sculpt the details of their wheel-thrown animal sculpture. Students will also select a pre-made ceramic bowl to practice glazing. Glazed items are fired overnight to be taken home on Day 4.
Day Four: Students will learn how to work with leather-hard clay by trimming and carving their creations from the prior three days, and be introduced to underglazes and sgraffito techniques to carve in textures, contrast and details like teeth and fur to their sculpture, mugs and piggy banks. At this stage, students will add a handle to their mugs. Students will spend time inspecting their own work and finishing details of their creations.
Prices include all instruction, clay, underglazes, tools, kiln firing, and dip-glazing/clear glazing of pottery. Pottery painting (outside of the camp session) is available with an additional booking two weeks after completing camp. Please message us for more details.
Camp occurs Tuesday- Friday. Ages 8+ please.
