Black Cat Sculptures
Something spooky this way comes — and it has whiskers.
Join Terracotta founder Candace Baltz for a bewitching evening of sculpting hauntingly gorgeous black cats — the kind your friends will demand to know where you got, and you'll get to say, smugly, "I made it."
This year we're leveling up on our Cat Lady Vibes, with kitty-inspired sculpting projects each month. Came last year? You'll want to come again. Different cats. Same energy. More drama.
The clay itself is the plot twist. We're using rare obsidian black clay — naturally, beautifully, dramatically black without a drop of glaze. It's dark brown when wet, then transforms in the kiln like magic (or, you know, chemistry — same thing during spooky season). Obsidian clay is notoriously hard to source, which is exactly why seats are limited and why you should stop reading and start booking.
What's included:
- All materials, including the precious obsidian clay
- Expert instruction in slabbing and sculpting techniques
- All equipment provided
- Firing included — your cat will be ready to haunt your home by the end of the month
All ages and all abilities welcome. Bring your coven, your coworkers, your mom, your nemesis — we book by seat, so grab one for everyone. Fair warning: black clay stains, so wear dark clothes or clothes you're willing to sacrifice to the craft gods.
About your instructor:
Candace Baltz is the founder of Terracotta, built on the vision of Sculpting a Kinder World. After two decades away from clay while pursuing careers in journalism, media, and higher education, she decided she'd attended enough meetings to last a lifetime and pivoted to creating joy full-time. She opened Terracotta Pullman in 2022 so no one else has to go 22 years without touching clay. She's been happily covered in it ever since.
*Note: The video shows our workshop from 2024 with Ivanka working with our dark chocolate speckled clay. This workshop uses obsidian black clay — dark brown when wet, dramatically black after firing. Pure magic.
