5-Day Off-Grid Fire Arts Retreat — Pottery & Glass Blowing at Terracotta Makuu

Eight spots. Five days. Two arts that involve fire. One corner of the Big Island of Hawaii where fire has always meant creation.

In Hawaiian tradition, Pele — goddess of volcanoes, fire, and creation — is not a myth. She is present. She is the lava that becomes land, the force that destroys and builds simultaneously, the reminder that from heat and pressure something entirely new can emerge. On the Big Island, you feel this. You don’t need to be told.

It is not a coincidence that two of the most ancient art forms on earth — pottery and glass blowing — also begin with fire. Clay becomes ceramic in the kiln. Sand becomes glass in the furnace. Earth transforms under heat into something permanent, functional, and beautiful. Pele has been doing this since the beginning. We’re just paying attention.

Welcome to Terracotta Makuʻu’s 5-Day Off-Grid Artist Retreat — a full immersion into two fire arts in one of the most volcanically alive places on the planet. You will throw on the wheel. You will stand at the furnace with a molten gather of glass on the end of a blowpipe and feel, in some small way, what it is to shape something from heat. You will eat extremely well. You will sleep deeply. And you will leave with work that carries the energy of this place in it, whether you intended that or not.

There are eight spots. There will not be more than eight spots. Plan accordingly.

July 29-August 2, 2027

🌺 The Itinerary:

Day 1 — Arrive & Breathe
Land. Exhale. Check in to the off-grid studio and let the Big Island do its thing. A gentle intro to hand-building gets your hands into clay before the day is out — no pressure, no performance, just the satisfying thwack of clay hitting the table and the first moment of “oh, I’m actually doing this.” Communal dinner under the stars to follow. Somewhere nearby, the island is still being made.

Day 2 — Clay Day
Wheel throwing or hand-building — your call. Morning instruction and studio time, followed by an afternoon  picnic and trip to cool off and snorkel with the beautiful fish that call the lava rocks home. Before sunset, make whatever the island is whispering to you while dinner is prepared nearby. Evening: sunset, good food, better conversation.

Day 3 — Fire Day
Today you meet the glass. The furnace. The pipe. The gather. You’ll learn the foundational techniques of glass blowing — gathering, shaping, inflating, and finishing — under expert guidance in  the  hot shop. The glass begins as sand and becomes something luminous under heat and breath and intention. Pele would understand. Hold your finished piece up to the Hawaiian light and try to remain calm. It’s okay if you can’t. Nobody remains calm the first time. Late afternoon and evening are on your own--swim in the ocean, nap in a hammock, or hover near the studio because you’re already too invested to be anywhere else. We understand completely.

Day 4 — Meet Pele
Our morning will start with fresh Kona coffee and breakfast on your own at the Maku'u Farmers Market before we hit the road to step on the newest land on earth. We will take picnic lunches to go experience the newest beach on the Island, take a dip in tide pools heated by the volcano, and walk on land that didn’t exist a decade ago.  Mid-afternoon we head to Kilauea. Pele defines and sets "island time" -- she fountains and naps as she pleases. We will return to the retreat in time for a desert under the stars.  Everything goes into the kiln and the annealer — the Pele takes over from here. 

Day 5 — Reveal & Celebrate
The kiln opens. The annealer opens. Your pieces — pottery and glass, earth transformed by fire — emerge finished and ready to travel home with you. Closing circle. A final meal worth the flight. You’ll leave with more than you expected to make, skills in two crafts you didn’t have five days ago, and a very specific kind of quiet that only comes from making things with your hands in a place this alive. Safe travels. We’ll miss you immediately.

• 5 days and 4 nights at Terracotta Makʻu, our private off-grid studio on the Big Island of Hawaii. July 29-August 2, 2027
• All clay, glazes, tools, and materials for pottery
• All glass, tools, and hot shop access for glass blowing
• Expert instruction in both disciplines for all skill levels — no experience required in either
• Kiln firing for pottery and annealing for glass
• All meals prepared with fresh, hyper-local ingredients including tropical fruits, fish, and whatever the garden is doing that week (please flag dietary needs in advance)
• A finished collection of pottery and blown glass pieces to bring home
• The kind of creative reset that takes weeks to fully arrive

• Flights and transportation to the studio
• Optional excursions (add-ons available)
• Your pre-retreat stress (please leave it at the airport — we mean this sincerely)

All skill levels welcome. You do not need pottery experience. You do not need glass blowing experience. You need curiosity, a willingness to stand near a very hot furnace, and the good judgment to book before one of the other seven people does.

Maximum 8 participants. This is not a marketing tactic. The studio is intimate by design, instruction is personal by intention, and the experience is better for everyone when the group stays small. Eight spots. That’s it.
