5-Day Off-Grid Artist Retreat — Terracotta Makuu, Big Island of Hawaii

Five days. Four art forms. Two farms. Eight people. One corner of the Big Island of Hawaii that will quietly, permanently change what you think a vacation can be.

This is not a resort. There is no pool with a swim-up bar. There is, however, a kiln. A stained glass studio. Watercolors and the most saturated landscape you have ever tried to paint. A working cacao farm where you will eat chocolate at the source and feel genuinely smug about it. A coffee farm that will ruin grocery store coffee for you forever. And a community of local artists whose studios you will walk through and whose work will make you want to make things for the rest of your life.

Welcome to the Terracotta Makuʻu 5-Day Off-Grid Artist Retreat — a full immersion into making, tasting, exploring, and remembering what it feels like to truly unplug and return to your soul.

Maximum 8 participants. This is intentional. The experience depends on it.

🌺 The Itinerary:

Day 1 — Aloha
Leave the airport behind. Check in to the off-grid studio at Terracotta Makuʻu and take your first real breath in what might be years. We’ll start with a gentle intro to hand-building — your hands in clay before the day is out, no experience required, no performance expected. Just presence and the deeply satisfying thwack of clay hitting the table...and cooled lava forms at the Maku'u cliffs. Communal dinner under the stars. The island introduces itself on its own terms.

Day 2 — Clay & Glass
Morning wheel session or hand-building — your choice, your pace. After lunch, the glass studio opens. You’ll learn the fundamentals of stained glass — cutting, shaping, and assembling colored glass into a piece that is entirely yours. Hold it up to the Hawaiian light in the afternoon and watch what happens to the room. Try not to immediately want to do it again. (You will want to do it again.) Evening: sunset, good food, better conversation.

Day 3 — Watercolor & Snorkel
Pick up a brush. Step outside. The Big Island does not make it easy to paint badly — the colors are too good, the light too extraordinary, the landscape too generous. A morning watercolor session over local Kona coffee and the Maku'u cliffs, with instruction for all levels, followed by an afternoon painting and snorkeling on our favorite locals-only beaches. See how people build a creative life in one of the most beautiful and remote places on earth. Come back with ideas, inspiration, and new fish and turtle friends. 

Day 4 — Farm Day
This is the day you eat your way through two of the most extraordinary agricultural experiences the Big Island offers. Morning: a  private guided tour of our favorite local cacao farm — from pod to chocolate, tasted at the source, in the shade of trees that smell like something from a dream. Afternoon: a coffee farm tour where you’ll learn how Kona coffee goes from cherry to cup and taste it in a way that will make every other cup of coffee feel slightly apologetic. Return to the studio in the evening to throw and decorate a mug to enjoy Kona coffee in when you're back to the mainland. Dinner will lean heavily into the flavors of the day.

Day 5 — Reveal & Celebrate
The kiln opens. The light comes through the finished glass. Your watercolors are dry. Everything you made over five days is in your hands — pottery, stained glass, paintings — fired, finished, and ready to travel home with you. Closing circle. A final meal worth every mile of travel. You’ll leave with more than you expected to make, a studio full of new references, a very personal relationship with cacao and coffee, and approximately zero desire to go back to your normal life. Safe travels. We’ll miss you immediately.

• Flights and transportation to the studio
• Additional optional excursions beyond the included farm tours and studio visits
• Your pre-retreat stress (please leave it at the airport — we mean this sincerely)

All skill levels welcome in every discipline. You do not need to have painted, thrown clay, or cut glass before. You need curiosity, a willingness to try things, and the good sense to book before one of the other seven people does.

Maximum 8 participants. The studio is intimate by design, instruction is personal by intention, and the whole thing works better when the group stays small. Eight spots. That’s it. There will not be a waitlist that saves you if you wait too long.
