June 25: Sunday Be the Light Series: Slab-Built Red Terracotta Lanterns

To celebrate summer solstice, join us SUNdays (get it!?) in June to create a series of light-themed pottery! Because we have a limited number of pottery wheels, if you choose to attend all three workshops, you will select between two dates for the wheel, and enjoy the remaining Sunday “off”)

Students will slab roll red terracotta clay and construct lanterns appropriate for pillar candles and use indoors or outside. Lanterns will be between 4” and 8” tall, and pierced using an assortment of provided shapes or with hand-carving techniques.  Students should seek candle holder design inspiration ahead of class and bring a print out of their inspiration to reference during the workshop. These lanterns will not be glazed so the natural beauty of their rich red clay color can be showcased and enjoyed. Students wishing to glaze their lanterns anyway should sign up for a premium glaze day to utilize our special glazes best matched for working with this type of clay.
